What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy shares its roots with osteopathy, and like osteopathy it is a hands-on physical treatment — but it works at a far gentler level. Rather than manipulating or adjusting the body, a craniosacral therapist listens to it.
What happens in a session?
A session typically begins with a full-body scan, not unlike an MRI, in which I move slowly through your system looking for blockages, imbalances, and areas that need attention. From there, I settle into a deep, focused state of listening , similar to a savasana (if you are familiar with yoga) and begin communicating with your body’s different systems: the endocrine system, which governs your hormones and mood; the lymphatic system, your body’s daily spring clean; and the respiratory system, which has a profound effect on how you cope with the physical, mental and emotional demands of daily life.
Our systems work relationally and so I listen to what the body wants to tell me and respond intuitively.
Being held in gentle, attentive touch, and clear intention, the body begins to feel safe and unthreatened, opening the way for the craniosacral process to unfold and connect with the deepest part of ourselves. It is within this space that healing can begin.
All sessions are fully clothed throughout.
Before your first session I will send you a detailed questionnaire covering your physical and emotional history. This helps me understand you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms.
Treating the cause, not just the symptom
You might arrive with a stiff neck and a reasonable explanation; too many hours at a screen. But your body may be telling a different story: an imbalance at the sacroiliac joint, affecting spinal alignment, creating torsion through the cervical spine and placing strain on the C5/C6 nerve roots. Treat only the neck and the relief is temporary. Find the root cause and the change lasts.
I approach every session as a detective; open-minded, curious, and looking for the primary cause rather than the presenting symptom.
Your body keeps the score
We are not only physical beings. The nervous system holds memory, emotional experiences, early life stress, old injuries - stored somatically in the body long after the mind has moved on. These patterns shape how we respond to every challenge that follows. Craniosacral therapy offers a way to gently revisit and release those historical blockages, without having to relive them consciously.
You were born with a perfect blueprint for health. The work is simply about finding your way back to it.
Who can it help?
Craniosacral therapy can support a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, back pain, stress and anxiety, trauma, and postnatal recovery for both mothers and babies. I’m based in Bristol and would love to hear from you — get in touch if you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, I’m always happy to have a conversation before you book.
